The published percentile anchors, state by state

The same five values the tool uses, listed in full. Sorted by median, highest first. Every figure is a published BLS OEWS May 2025 estimate for SOC 19-3033; nothing here is interpolated. The spread between the 10th and the 90th percentile is the honest width of the profession in that state, and it varies a lot: District of Columbia runs $254,550 wide, Arkansas only $53,470.

How the placement is worked out

  • Five anchors per area come from the BLS OEWS May 2025 files: the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentile annual wages. Those are published values and the tool prints them as published.
  • A salary that lands exactly on one of the five is reported at that published percentile with no hedging.
  • A salary between two anchors is placed by straight-line interpolation between them. Wage distributions are not straight lines, so that placement is approximate. The readout carries a tilde and names both anchors it sits between.
  • Nothing is extrapolated below the 10th or above the 90th percentile. A salary outside that range is reported as being outside it, not converted into a 3rd or a 97th percentile that BLS never published.
  • Connecticut, Maine and Maryland publish no May 2025 distribution for SOC 19-3033. Those states abstain here exactly as they do in the tables elsewhere on this site.
  • OEWS is a survey of wage and salary employment. It excludes self-employed private-practice income, so a full-time private practitioner is not the population being measured here.

Common questions

What percentile is my psychologist salary?
Nationally, for clinical and counseling psychologists (SOC 19-3033), BLS OEWS May 2025 puts the 10th percentile at $55,170, the 25th at $73,210, the median at $100,580, the 75th at $135,200 and the 90th at $180,960. A salary of $100,580 sits exactly at the median: half of the 75,990 psychologists BLS counted under that code earned less. The tool on this page places any figure against those five points and against your state.
What salary puts a psychologist in the top 10 percent?
$180,960 or more, nationally, under SOC 19-3033 in BLS OEWS May 2025. For the broad psychologists group (SOC 19-3030) the 90th percentile is $163,380. BLS does not publish anything above the 90th percentile, so no source can tell you where inside the top decile a given salary falls.
Why does the tool say a percentile is approximate?
BLS publishes five points in the distribution, not all one hundred. A salary that lands exactly on one of those five gets the published percentile. A salary between two of them is placed by drawing a straight line between the two published points, which is an approximation of a curve that is not actually straight. The tool marks those readouts with a tilde and names the two published anchors it sat between.
Why do some states have no percentile data?
BLS suppressed or did not publish the May 2025 wage distribution for SOC 19-3033 in Connecticut, Maine and Maryland. Suppression usually reflects a sample too small to publish without disclosing an individual employer. Selecting one of those states returns an abstention rather than a substituted figure from a neighbouring state or an older release.
Which psychologist SOC code does this use?
SOC 19-3033, Clinical and Counseling Psychologists, for both the national and the state views, because it is the only psychologist code BLS publishes state by state. The national view also shows SOC 19-3030, the broad Psychologists group, as a second read. The two are different populations and different numbers: $100,580 median for 19-3033 against $99,110 for 19-3030.
Does the percentile account for private practice or specialty?
No. OEWS covers wage and salary employment, which means it reflects employed psychologists rather than self-employed private-practice income, and SOC 19-3033 does not split by specialty. For specialty and setting adjustments, use the salary calculator; for the private-practice picture, see the private practice page.
